More on Gaming

I had so many comments about Tom's response to my gaming thoughts, I decided to make it a new post In no particular order:

A) KOTOR I  >  KOTOR II. Mechanics-wise (II) may have had more in it. (I) was one of the most compelling stories I've ever seen in a game. Probably the most.

B) I did NWN I 5 years ago. It was awesome. Taking the built in stories alone was just OK. The community content was what put it over the top. That and the fun of making your own stuff. Oh, and going online and playing in persistant worlds, which were basically micro-MMOs.

NWN II: I did not have the horsepower until late last year. When I did, it blew my machine up with a blu-screen. I have a new BIOS flash (my mobo was newly released when I bought it) and new video drivers, so I am going to re-try.

C) Dragon Age. Did not do it for me. It should have. I don't know why. On paper it had all the pluses of KOTOR I and NWN I put together: Compelling story; flexible toolset. The story was flat for me. Flat. It was too long, too. The character system they came up with was too simplistic.

Part of the problem with the Bioware stuff is that your character is a cypher. It really worked in KOTOR I because of particular plot circumstances. Everywhere else, it just feels a little hollow. Mass Effect I limited your personality choices, and I think that helped. If you try to write a story, where the main character could be anyone, it turns out that the main character isn't anyone.

On the toolset side, I did not get the same sense of support for DA that I did for NWN I. If I want to make something, I have no Idea where to start. For NWN I, the best source of info was a 3rd party site. By trying to bring everyone to the bioware site, they have made things worse.

D) Gaming and lifestyle: no online bro events :( . I wish there was a way for something like this to work, but I just do not see it. Don't get me wrong. I deeply lament the absense of bro-mance in my life. (The movie "I love you, Man" affected me deeply) But even if you manage to secure some time, it's not time that anyone else has because it's randomly distributed and you don't find out about it until the last minute. What I need is an old-style "Poker Night" type slot... but how do I get one?

KOTORS: Liked both. Found two in ways deeper than one, one in ways deeper than two. Two suffered a bit from having changed dev shops in mid-stream (you can see it in some of the things included in the release but not in the game... spelunking the audio and text files reveals interesting tidbits of a more involved and different ending).

NWN 1 (Diamond): Doug and I did Ascalorn and have several other dungeons queued up. I am sure we could arrange some playing thereof.

Game Slots:

1) Propose a time. Schedule it with your authorities. Make it a couple of hours in the evening some weeknight. Maybe one week out of two. Try to stick to that.

2) If you were to reinvest in an interest in NWN 1 or we were to find another replacement, I am certain we could draft some other players. Doug would certainly join us and perhaps we could convince one or two of the others to do so as well.

That is all I have to offer at this time.
